The next phase in the growth of Urban Village is the proposed redevelopment of Kings Lane Corner. This provides a natural extension to Urban Village and will front on to the Strand and the lane, which is a key pedestrian link to High Street and the city centre. The scheme will provide more affordable homes, a series of shipping container style units that will accommodate several small-scale businesses, and landscaped open spaces. The scheme will form another piece in the urban village jigsaw and combined with previous projects and future plans, will create a vibrant local destination that will appeal to visitors, businesses and residents.

A brief history…

The site adjoins the medieval line of the river Tawe along what is now the Strand. The river was diverted to allow for the creation of North Dock in 1852. The dock was eventually filled in and is now the site of Parc Tawe. The building of the dock was in response to the demands of the industrial revolution and the growth in copper and coal use. The Kings Lane Corner site was on the edge of the railway sidings that were known as the Coal Drops, where extracted material from mine workings was held in storage and transported to ships berthed in the dock. The design of the scheme to incorporate modern shipping style steel containers is therefore a reference back to its industrial past, as well as providing inspiration for a different design approach to development in the area.
