At Beacon we are passionate about urban regeneration, which is an approach to city planning to repair the social, environmental and economic problems of an urban area. Our objective is to transform obsolete or blighted areas into economically productive places in the community. We have a dedicated Regeneration Team, who work with partners such as local authorities, and aim to:
Cwrt yr Afon overlooks the river Ogmore in the centre of Bridgend. The site was previously occupied by a multi-storey car park which was suffering from structural issues, resulting in many spaces being fenced off for safety. Beacon redeveloped the site in partnership with Bridgend Council and the Welsh Government, who part-funded the development with Vibrant and Viable Places regeneration funding and social housing grant.
The site now comprises 28 two-bed flats for social rent above a commercial space, now let to a gym. Next to the residential and commercial block which was retained by Beacon, a new 242-space carpark was created for Bridgend Council.
Ty’r Hen Gastell occupies a site on Nolton Street in the centre of Bridgend. Beacon acquired the original, early 20th century building on the site from the Church in Wales. Its prior use was as a fast food restaurant. The completely redeveloped site now comprises 12 social rented flats over two commercial units. The new development’s name means ‘Old Castle House’. The name was chosen because the building likely stands within the footprint of Bridgend’s original Norman castle, of which now no trace remains.
